Frequently asked questions

How does Altheo pick my 10 directories?

We read your homepage, work out what kind of business you run, and match you against a library of 200 vetted directories organised into 20 business categories. You get the ten that fit your industry, weighted towards your primary category with a few from a relevant secondary one. It is a shortlist, not a submission service — you decide which ones are worth your time.

Is the directory shortlist free?

Yes. Enter a URL and get your ten directories, with no account and no email required. We ask for an email only if you want to join the waitlist for the full workspace, and that is optional.

Are these directories actually worth listing on?

The library is curated rather than scraped. It contains established review platforms, industry directories and marketplaces that vet their listings — the kind of place a real customer might plausibly find you. We include a directory when there is a plausible reason a customer would browse it, and leave out the ones that exist only to host links.

Will directory listings improve my search rankings?

Some will, indirectly and slowly. A listing on a genuinely authoritative directory can pass authority and, more importantly, puts you where people actually search. What directories reliably do is build consistency: the same business name, address and description in many trusted places is a strong signal to both search engines and AI assistants. Treat them as one input among several, not a shortcut.

Do directory listings help with ChatGPT and Claude?

They can. Assistants build their picture of a business from what the wider web says, not from your own site alone. If you appear consistently across the review platforms and directories in your industry, there is something for an assistant to draw on when someone asks for a recommendation. If you are absent everywhere, there is nothing.

What does Domain Rating mean?

Domain Rating (DR) is an Ahrefs metric from 0 to 100 that estimates the strength of a website's backlink profile. A higher DR broadly means a stronger site. It is a useful shorthand for comparing directories, but it is not the whole story — a DR 45 directory that your actual customers browse is worth more to you than a DR 90 one nobody in your industry reads. Our ratings are a stored snapshot rather than a live lookup; the ones marked with an asterisk are indicative estimates rather than verified Ahrefs readings.

Should I submit to all ten at once?

No rush, and consistency matters more than speed. Work through them over a few weeks, using exactly the same business name, address, phone number and description each time. Inconsistent details across listings undermine the signal you are trying to build.

What if my business does not fit any of the categories?

The library covers 20 broad categories that between them account for most small and mid-sized businesses. If your match looks off, the shortlist is still a reasonable starting point, and the general local business directories apply to almost everyone. The full Altheo workspace goes further by using your company profile rather than just your homepage.
